This spectacular event is one of Scotland’s best-known Hogmanay celebrations and takes place just 10 miles from the park. The local community has celebrated the fireballs for well over 100 years, making it a highlight of the festive calendar in Aberdeenshire.
As the bells of the old Town House ring in the New Year, the fireballs are lit, and the procession begins. First, the local pipe band leads the way through the harbour area. Then, around 40 locals swing large balls of fire above their heads in a dramatic display of bravery and tradition.
Finally, the swingers throw the fireballs into the harbour to mark the end of the ceremony. Afterwards, fireworks light up the sky as the crowds celebrate the arrival of the New Year.
However, be warned, this is an extremely popular free event that attracts between 8,000 and 12,000 spectators each year. For this reason, it is best to arrive early if you want a good viewing spot.
People usually begin gathering along the High Street from around 10pm on December 31st. Street entertainment starts at 11pm, while the fireball ceremony itself begins at midnight and lasts for around 20 minutes.
Because of safety restrictions, organisers close access to the High Street once it reaches capacity. This can happen any time after 11pm, so be sure to arrive early to avoid disappointment.
