The Northern Lights

Winter in the countryside offers the best opportunity to experience the aurora borealis.

The Northern Lights (also called the Aurora Borealis) is an amazing natural electrical phenomenon characterized by the appearance of streamers of reddish or greenish light in the sky. It is a magical sight to experience.  

When to see the Northern Lights? 

Winter with its long periods of darkness and the frequency of clear nights, is the best time of the year to see the aurora displays. Nights need to be cold and the sky clear of clouds, with limited light pollution and increased solar activity.  

While Deeside Holiday Park, our most northerly location, offers the best chance of spotting the northern lights, they can be seen anywhere in Scotland when the right conditions are met and where the light pollution is at a minimum. In fact, the rural location of all six of our parks, means that you will experience dark skies and can enjoy the night sky peppered with stars, even if you don’t catch the aurora.
